Contact with the fresh plant can cause phototoxic dermatitis (phytophotodermatitis), leading to severe skin blistering when exposed to sunlight. Avoid use by individuals with kidney or liver conditions.
Cultivation NotesRue prefers full sun and well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and can be grown from seed or cuttings. Prune in spring to maintain shape and encourage bushiness.

Description

Ruta graveolens is an aromatic, evergreen subshrub characterized by its distinctive bluish-green, bipinnate or tripinnate leaves, which are dotted with oil glands. When bruised, the leaves emit a strong, somewhat acrid scent. The plant typically grows to about 2-3 feet tall, producing clusters of small, yellow-green flowers.
